basics
TURF has a precise scoring system with two main types of points. Here's how it actually works:
Point Types
Round Points vs Total Points
- Round Points: Points accumulated during the current game round, reset when round ends
- Total Points: Cumulative points across your entire TURF career, determines your rank
- Event/Bonanza Points: Special event points that don't count toward round or total points
The Two Scoring Systems
Takeover Points (TP)
- Range: 65 to 185 points per zone capture
- Neutral zone bonus: Up to 235 TP for capturing neutral (never-taken) zones
- Revisit penalty: Only half the normal TP when recapturing zones you've owned before
- Formula: TP = 200 - 15 × PPH (so higher PPH zones give fewer takeover points)
Points Per Hour (PPH)
- Range: 1 to 9 PPH per zone
- Continuous earning: Points divided by 60, received every minute you own the zone
- Formula: PPH = (200 - TP) ÷ 15 (so lower takeover point zones give more hourly points)
- 15-hour rule: Every zone generates exactly 200 total points if held for 15 hours
The 200-Point System
This is the key to understanding TURF scoring:
- Every zone equals 200 points total: TP + (PPH × 15 hours) = 200 points
- Trade-off: High takeover points = low hourly points, and vice versa
- Strategic choice: Quick points now vs. steady points over time
Zone Capture Process
Basic Requirements
- Physical presence: Must be within the zone's boundaries (approximately 25x25 meters)
- GPS enabled: Requires location services active on your device
- Network connection: Need internet connection to register the capture
- Zone availability: Zone must not be blocked (red zones cannot be captured)
Capture Mechanics
- Zone boundaries: Must be within the defined zone area to capture
- Capture time: Takes a few seconds to complete the takeover
- GPS accuracy: Poor signal can prevent successful captures
Strategic Considerations
Takeover vs Hourly Strategy
- High TP zones (65-185 points): Good for immediate points, lower long-term value
- High PPH zones (1-9 per hour): Better for sustained point generation
- Neutral zones: Best immediate value with bonus takeover points (up to 235)
- Revisit penalty: Recapturing your old zones gives only half normal TP
Unique Zone System
- Unique zones: Zones you've captured at least once in your TURF career
- Round unique zones: Different zones captured in the current round
- Achievement tracking: Unique zone count affects medals and progression
Zone Blocking and Cooldowns
- Blocked zones: Cannot be captured when red/blocked
- Post-capture cooldown: Zones enter blocked status after being captured
- Cooldown duration: Varies based on the capturing player's rank
Point Optimization Tips
Understanding the Trade-off
- Every zone offers exactly 200 total points over 15 hours
- Choose between immediate high TP or sustained high PPH
- Plan based on how long you expect to hold zones
Maximizing Efficiency
- Route planning: Capture multiple zones efficiently to minimize travel
- Use TurfZones analytics: Explore zone maps and statistics to identify high-value areas in your city
- Zone selection: Balance immediate needs vs long-term strategy
- Visiting new cities: Use TurfZones to scout unfamiliar areas when traveling or on holiday
- Timing: Consider when you can actively play vs when zones run unattended
